Company History

1977

Mark Hamister, founder and CEO of Hamister Group, LLC, established his first senior living company, which grew into National Health Care Affiliates, Inc. (NHCA), ranking among the top 20 long-term care and sub-acute providers in the United States.

1980s

National Health Care Affiliates, Inc. earned a place on the Inc. 500 list five times, securing its induction into the Inc. Magazine Hall of Fame.

1996

NHCA had 37 business units in six states and annual sales exceeding $100 million. NHCA exceeded industry standards throughout most of its tenure. It was so highly recognized that other companies engaged NHCA to manage their facilities.

NHCA’s Research Group had predicted that market factors would cause long-term-care and home-care companies to make a choice between quality and profitability. Since NHCA was unwilling to sacrifice either one, company leaders decided that it was time to sell. In 1996, a public REIT named Genesis purchased the majority of NHCA’s business units for $134 million. NHCA’s customers and employees had the opportunity to continue their relationships with a reputable organization. Shareholders attained an internal annual rate of return on their investment exceeding 37%.

1997

Hamister and other shareholders purchased Health Services of Northern New York, Inc. (HSNNY), a home healthcare agency in St. Lawrence County, NY. HSNNY is a separate corporate entity managed by Hamister Group, LLC. At the time of purchase, the annual sales were under $5 million; by 2012, sales exceeded $7.4 million.
