Impressive Renovation Adds Sense of Fun to Our Assisted Living Residence

At Brompton Heights Assisted Living Residence in Williamsville, NY, we are presently in the midst of a $10 million renovation. It was our intention from the beginning to include the residents as much as possible in the project. After all, it would be unwise to undertake such an expensive renovation without the input of those who actually live there.

Our residents began by reviewing the spectacular plans, which include:

A new recreation center, library, and information technology center, all of which face an enclosed inner courtyard with gardens and walking path
A 12-seat movie theater
New, over-sized rooms with king beds (private suites) and queen beds (private rooms)
A luxurious new dining room, front-entrance, lobby, and ice cream parlor
A 20-bed memory care unit
15 senior apartments with full kitchens, interior access to the assisted living residence, and option to dine in the assisted living residence or have meals delivered to the apartment

Covered front entrance walkway with a snow melt system to prevent slipping on ice

Obviously, all of the residents were thrilled with these additions and improvements. Who wouldn't be? After receiving resident approval for these plans our Project Coordinator held regular meetings with the residents to obtain their input on various aspects of the project. After several of these meetings she brought over design boards that included samples of wallpaper, paint, colors and designs. This enabled our residents to visualize the new plans and give input on how they felt about certain designs. Our residents were empowered to take on the role of team designers in what will soon become their new home.
Before construction began our management team met with residents to brief them on the upcoming stages of development. Since we had been talking about the project for quite some time, it was very exciting to finally know that the land clearing was about to begin. When final word came and the trucks rolled in, residents and co-workers alike looked on with awe at the first fall of the great pines. We all took every opportunity to watch this amazing transformation. Residents watched from their windows as well as from our outdoor patio, which gave them a bird’s eye view.

It was interesting to note the level of conversation centered on the land clearing and the buzz of anticipation about what would fill this empty spot. As questions began to surface on details of the new building we decided to post colored drawings of the new facility. These remain in our front lobby as serves as a conversation piece and reminder to all who pass by it. Residents enjoy showing their families and guests. Co-workers are proud to show residents the new locations of popular areas, such as the ice cream parlor and movie theatre. Visitors who come into the building are curious and impressed at the enormous undertaking and look forward to seeing our new home.

Our residents now spend more time than usual in the ice cream parlor, a prime spot for viewing the construction. Here they are able to see daily changes as rapid progress is made. As the weather this winter was abnormally mild, progress on the building has been swift and each day brings new changes to the landscape. Its fun to see the design being created as we watch.

Hard hats are readily available and when it’s safe, residents may be escorted to areas for an up-close view. The men especially enjoy watching the building go up. Everyone, including residents, visitors and co-workers, are waiting with excited anticipation for the final frame to be built.
